If My Daughter Likes Animals Could She Be A Furrie?

Furry researchers have launched a 'Just Like You' campaign to help people ameliorate understand the subculture, which they say helps people connect and brand friendships.

If your depressed teenage son came home and appear he had constitute a group where he felt like he belonged and information technology made him happy, y'all'd likely be very supportive.

Only what if, every bit part of this group, your son dressed up like a raccoon and met with other people who dressed upwards as animals they connected with on some level?

Still feeling supportive?

Identity researcher Sharon Roberts says y'all should.

The associate professor at Renison University College at the University of Waterloo is an practiced in the furry subculture and has seen first hand the benefits the community has on its members.

Furries are people who create an identity as an brute – called a fursona – and connect with other people who do the same.

"The fursona component of the furry was very interesting to me," Roberts said about why she starting time began researching it.

"It'due south usually an emulation of some sort of animal, or animals. It can exist a hybrid. And they take attributes that they appreciate – it could be physical, information technology could be spiritual. And so this persona represents, often, an idealized version of who somebody wants to be."

But Like You entrada

The connectedness people who are part of the hirsuite subculture feel towards each other is the reason Roberts wants people to better sympathise furries.

She and other researchers who are office of the International Anthropomorphic Inquiry Project launched Furscience in April – a website to help people learn more almost furries.

This month, they've started the "Just Like You" campaign.

The offset video asks the question: How do furries go wine tasting?

This week's video asks: How practice furries exercise yoga?

The answer to both questions, perhaps unsurprisingly given the name of the entrada, is that their experience is no unlike than that of anyone else.

"I see what the fandom ways to people and I think, well, why should other people care for these people horribly when they're just minding their own business organisation … [and] this is really really beneficial to the participants of the fandom," she said.

"'This fandom saved my life,' was something I heard over and over again."

Furries in popular civilisation

A bluish true cat who says its friends call them "Sexy" is lead into a police station to be asked by a squad of law-breaking scene investigators what he knows about the death of a human being in a raccoon costume.

It's a scene from the 2003 episode of CSI: Criminal offense Scene Investigation Fur and Loathing, that focused on furries. In this episode, they are all particularly interested in having sexual practice with one another.

If nosotros institute something that keeps young people prophylactic, to me, nosotros should learn equally much near information technology and endeavour to apply information technology, because something's working in this group that is defeating youth suicide. - Dr. Sharon Roberts, identity researcher

But the episode is everything that is wrong with what people know about the furry subculture, Roberts said.

Being a hirsuite isn't near having a fetish of some kind – it'south about connecting with other people and forming friendships, she said.

"Virtually people don't know what a hirsuite is," she said, calculation it tin can be difficult to get the give-and-take out about the benefits of the subculture when screenwriters desire to exploit it for jokes or a far-fetched storyline.

"These are some of the kindest people I've e'er met in my life, some of the most accepting people," she said.

'Something's working' in this grouping

Roberts has done studies on bullying and people who plow to hirsuite fandom often take unduly loftier rates of bullying in their past.

But they feel differently when around other furries.

"They become so protective of the inclusive nature of the fandom, information technology becomes central to the definition of the fandom for them, in that this is a safe place where they can be who they want to be," she said.

She said data shows nigh seventy per cent of furries are office of the LGBTQ customs. Considering that is a community where there is an elevated rate of people who die past suicide, she said it's interesting to come across those who become furries feel accustomed. In the research done past the International Anthropomorphic Research Project, youth have likewise said hirsuite fandom has helped them cope with problems in their lives.

And there's admittedly zero incorrect with that, Roberts said.

Just Like You is a campaign from the researchers behind Furscience.com to inform the public most the benefits the furry subculture has for those who are part of information technology. (Furscience.com)

"If nosotros found something that keeps immature people safe, to me, we should learn as much about it and try to utilise it, because something's working in this group that is defeating youth suicide," she said. "To me, I'll become on top of my firm and scream about that if everyone volition mind."

And if you lot're a parent whose son or daughter says they've found acceptance in the furry fandom, but y'all're not sure what that ways, Roberts said but ask. Ask your kid to meet pictures of their fursona, show involvement, maybe fifty-fifty attend a furry convention where there are often parent panels past experts.

"I'grand child free, merely if I had a child, and the worst thing they said was that they were a furry, I would consider myself domicile complimentary," she said.
